365 different reasons to celebrate the year
When tourists come to New York, many a times they time their trips with celebrations such as St. Patrick's Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving Day etc. which are done with great show and pomp in this city. The old classics like Valentine's Day, Christmas are of course no brainers. But New Yorkers love to celebrate each and every day, and you're not even scratching the tip of the iceberg if you think these are all that it has to offer. Read on to find out about all the preposterous stuff that have been honored by a day so that everyday is a different 'Day of Something'.
Let me start with the best, instead of saving it for the last- the days dedicated to food and drinks. Did you ever know of the super important National cappuccino day, pizza day, whisky day, pancake day, soup day, taco day, beer day and so many such? If you've already noticed, these days are (mostly) of National importance. So it doesn't only apply to New York, but this city does go big on them. New York loves to convert any National day into a feasting day, whenever it can and no matter how much stretching of the imagination involved. For example, on National pi day (the mathematical number pi), many shops were selling the whole pizza pie (drop the e and read pi) or even apple pies for $3.14! As you can guess, on every other food & drink day, there will be some places doling out that item for free or will charge you something just for laughs. Have a list of things to eat in New York (who doesn't)? Wait for the respective day to come up and then have a ball :)
What else do you think of when in New York- did you say shopping? Sale days here are special too. Americans love home so much that they've converted most of their long weekends in the year to days of sale. If you're in US, are you sure you want to go southwards in December just for some sun, and miss the Boxing Day sale?! How will you get the latest coat at 60% reduced price if you're tripping on Labor Day? Oh, maybe you can still find some left overs on Black Friday. And later, may we all be able to throw out the old and Spring forward with sale times during President's day.
Now, for all the other (and often bizarre) stuff. No pants day in the subway in January. This is an absolutely New Yorky thing. Exactly why would somebody want to strip in this friggin cold month? They are not even being asked to take a dip in freezing water or roll in the snow, which could perhaps have some health benefits. And God forbid, what if you have a "Day" enthusiast or two sticking next to you, in their pant less avatar, during your crammed subway ride to office? I've seen the Go Topless day, which was in support of equality. Yet to see what happens on National weed day, though that's something you can always smell in the air when you're walking about in this city, which actually still hasn't legalized it by the way.
As they say, anything can happen in New York, and this is often how it does. Do any of these 'days' meet your inner fettish? Have you secretly wanted to gorge on free pancakes and ride a public transport sans pants? And see, so many of these can be experienced without going broke. In fact, accommodation prices won't surge during these 'days', and enormous crowds won't make you wish that you were anywhere else but in the Big Apple itself. So just come over, the city will always be celebrating, cause it has a new reason for each day.
